A first Strathfield food visit without a car

For a food visit, the restaurant is the reason for the trip. Keep the plan small enough that a long meal or a changed menu will not disrupt the rest of the day.

Decide whether this is a meal trip or a sightseeing day

Start with how much time you want to spend eating and talking. Then add the actual return journey from your accommodation. A lunch outing can be worthwhile on its own; it does not have to be combined with a harbour visit just to look like a full itinerary.

Use Strathfield station as the agreed meeting area, then choose the exact venue and entrance together. Check your date and journey in the official planner rather than using an old travel-time claim from a blog. The usefulness of this area depends partly on where you are starting.

Make the budget from a menu you can see

Pick the meal before adding drinks or dessert, and establish whether menu prices are per person or intended for sharing. If a group shares dishes, divide the actual order fairly rather than multiplying a sample set meal by every traveller.

A useful food budget has three lines: the meal, optional extras, and transport. Give the extras an explicit allowance. That makes it easy to decide whether another stop fits without treating a cheap headline meal as the cost of the whole outing.

Keep weather and luggage in view

Check the seating arrangement with the venue if rain, wind or heat would change the visit. Do not assume that photographs of a table mean indoor seating is available. If you are arriving with suitcases, ask about the space and storage arrangements before choosing the venue.

Finish the meal plan with a return connection and enough room to walk back. A food outing should be easy to shorten if the group is tired or the venue is busy.

Our connection to the area

Michael Song, the founder of Sydney × 3, moved to Strathfield in 1991 and operates Cafe Crop at Strathfield Square. That is a business relationship, not an independent recommendation. Cafe Crop's seating is outdoors, so weather is a practical part of that particular visit.

This guide does not claim we recently tested a list of restaurants or checked all menus. It provides a way to plan your own visit with current information. Use the trip budget for the food and transport allowance, and compare the outing with the time available before committing.
