Rain plan

A Sydney rain plan with one good indoor visit

An indoor attraction does not make the whole journey indoors. Build a wet-weather plan around one main visit, then count the exposed walk from the station and the route back.

Use one anchor

Our indoor-first route uses the Australian Museum general collections as its main visit. The official visitor page states that general entry is free, while major exhibitions can require paid tickets. You can have a substantial indoor stop without treating a paid exhibition as compulsory.

The hours checked for this route were 10am to 5pm daily, with Christmas Day closed. The planner excludes that date and will not place this visit before 10am. The official visitor page remains the place to confirm any change before leaving.

Allow 3½ hours rather than collecting stops

Part of the planOur allowance
Station approach and getting oriented20 minutes
General collections120 minutes
Food and a rest45 minutes
Return walk and connection buffer25 minutes

This is a planning model, not a promised queue or walking time. If you enjoy the collections, use more of the day there instead of rushing towards a second museum. If you need a shorter visit, decide which part to cut before you go.

Check bags before selecting the route

The museum lists luggage and large bags as not permitted. Resolve suitcase storage with your accommodation or a separately checked provider first. Do not assume a cloakroom means every item can be admitted.

Choose the food allowance yourself. The planner's initial meal figure is a budget input and does not represent a current menu price. Bringing the allowance down changes the displayed total; it does not change what a café will charge.

Be honest about the walking

The route's approximately 1.2 kilometres of walking is an estimate for the approach and return, not an audited indoor corridor or step-free itinerary. Use the museum's access information if entrances, lifts or mobility facilities affect your visit. For the transport leg, check the official journey planner close to departure.

Select Rain in the day planner. It filters out our outdoor-first routes. That selection does not fetch a forecast, so look at current conditions before deciding what to carry and whether to travel.
