Book the first day around the tired person who has just landed, not the energetic person who booked the flight. The useful question is how much time remains after the airport, luggage and a proper rest.
Start with your hotel, even if the room is not ready
Ask your accommodation whether it will hold bags before check-in, what time that service starts, and whether there is a charge. Get the answer for your booking. A place that stores a guest's suitcase is not automatically a public luggage-storage service.
If storage is not confirmed, keep the plan close to the accommodation or a storage provider you have checked. Avoid committing to several venues with a large bag. The Australian Museum, for example, lists luggage and large bags among items not permitted. Its cloakroom should not be assumed to be a workaround for that rule.
Use time after bag drop as the starting number
| Usable time after bag drop | A sensible first-day choice |
|---|---|
| About 2½ hours | A short harbour visit with one food break |
| About 4 hours | The harbour and The Rocks, with the return walk included |
| Rain, and at least 3½ hours after 10am | One museum visit, with outdoor approaches allowed for |
| Very little energy or uncertain luggage | Eat near the accommodation and keep sightseeing optional |
These are our planning allowances, not transport schedules. Start counting only after arrival formalities, the trip from the airport and bag drop. A four-hour window measured from landing can become much smaller.
Pick an easy finish
Choose a route that returns to its start or finishes near the hotel. On an arrival day the final walk matters just as much as the first. An attractive one-way route can leave a tired group a long way from a shower and the room key.
The short harbour route in our planner starts and finishes at Circular Quay. It reserves time for an exterior Opera House visit and a food break, rather than treating photographs as a two-minute stop. Public precinct access may change for events, so check the Opera House visitor page before setting out.
Give delays somewhere to go
Keep one sightseeing stop removable. If bag drop is slow, shorten the walking loop. If lunch takes longer, remove the optional extension. Do not remove the return journey or the time needed to collect luggage.
A first-day plan has done its job if everyone reaches the accommodation with enough energy for the next morning. Use the day planner with the time you really have, and use the airport comparison before choosing how the group gets into town.
