This is the starting area for our short harbour and longer Rocks routes. It makes the plan easy to understand: meet at Circular Quay, take an exterior harbour visit, then finish near the same transport area. You do not need to add another neighbourhood to make the day worthwhile.
Choose the route length first
The short harbour option estimates about 1.6 kilometres of walking and reserves 2½ hours. The longer option allows a larger loop and more time in The Rocks. Both include pauses and a finish, rather than treating the outward walk as the entire effort.
These are planning estimates. They are not an audited accessible route or a record of recently measured walking times. Check the Opera House's visitor information if entrances or event arrangements affect the visit.
Protect the weather alternative
A harbour day is exposed. On a wet day, compare the appeal of the outdoor route with the indoor-first museum plan, including the transport to that different starting point. Do not treat a café break as a promise of available shelter or seating.
Budget the optional parts honestly
The exterior route does not include an Opera House interior tour, a ferry excursion or a performance ticket. Add those only if you want them, and reserve the time as well as the money. Choose food from your own allowance, then use the current menu at the place you select.
